Grandma Hecke Dead
Mrs. Ann E. Lane, better known as "Grandma" Hecke, one of the oldest and best known women in this section of Chariton county, died at her home seven miles southeast of Brunswick Monday night, March 29, shortly after 10 o'clock. Mrs. Lane before her marriage was Ann Elizabeth Lambert, She was born in Scioto county, Ohio, Feb. 2, 1835, and at the time of her death had reached the ripe old age of 80 years, 1 month, and 27 days. When about 16 years of age she came with her parents to Missouri, settling in Chariton County, and practically all the remainder of her life was spent in the county, in the vicinity of Brunswick. The place where she died had been her home for more than half a century. In 1854 she was united in marriage to Mr. Charles Hecke, who preceded her to the grave in 1871. Of this union six children were born, one of whom died in infancy. The living children are:George T. Hecke and Mrs. P.C. Keith of Kansas City, and W.L. Hecke, Mrs. Wm. Carson and Robert H. Hecke, all of the vicinity of Brunswick. In 1873 Mrs. Hecke was married a second time, to Mr. John Lane, who also preceded her to the tomb many years ago. Of this union one child, Mrs. G Roesen, of Slater, survives.

There have been few, if any, women in Chariton county better known than Grandma Hecke. Having lived in this county and in this community for more than three-score years, she had a wide acquintance, and was a familiar figure in the Brunswick bottoms, where she lived. In spite of her extreme age, she remained happy and cheerful to the end of her long life journey. She had a good word for everyone, and everyone had a good word for her. She had been for many years a member of the Christian church. Many old friends regret her passing away, and these old friends will cherish her memory. Funeral services were held at her home Wednesday, conducted by Rev.A.C.Stormont of Dalton, after which her remains were laid to rest in the family burying ground near her home. May she rest in peace.
